Hazardous areas are to be found in a very wide range ofmanufacturing industries, far beyond the obviouspetrochemical plants. Food, pharmaceutical and cosmeticmanufacture all involve processing potentially explosivesubstances, while the problems of explosions in grain silosand sugar processing plants are very well documented.
There are two ways of ensuring that the alarm sounders orstrobes do not initiate an explosion when operated in ahazardous area: explosion proof or intrinsically safe devices.
For Zones 2 and 22, ‘increased safety’ devices are required. E2S offers powerful and cost-effective ex sounders and exbeacons for these environments.

In the great majority of automatic fire alarmsounders or fire alarm systems, the end result of thedetection of a fire is the initiation of audible andvisual warning devices that alert the occupants to thedanger so that they can evacuate the premises.
Given the complexity and variation of different typesof buildings and structures in which fire alarmsounders are installed, and the further variations tobe found in the homogeneity or otherwise of theoccupants, it is clear that, for maximum effectiveness,many different types of fire alarm sounders will berequired.

Typically, alarm sounders for wide area signalling, such ashorn loudspeakers or PA loudspeakers consist of threeindividual sounders that are pole-mounted at 120° to givefull 360° coverage; in order to minimise cabling costs, thesystems are often battery powered and are radiocontrolled.
As well as providing wide area coverage, such alarmsounder systems are often used on building andconstruction sites, where they provide excellent protectionlevels for the workforce. Typically, the horn loudspeakersare initiated from radio manual call points, either through asystem of master/slave control panels or directly if thesystem is self contained.
Mobility is a key feature, with the individual units beingmoved around the site as the work progresses. Wide areasignalling alarm sounders are particularly useful on atemporary basis when construction work is being carriedout on large or congested sites or for more permanentinstallations like those needing to meet obligations underthe Control of Major Accident Hazard (COMAH)regulations.
